DCD Exempt from EPA Oversite

Did you know that dicyandiamide (DCD) is exempt from the EPA’s regulatory provisions regarding nitrogen stabilizers?

The Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act (FIFRA) requires that all pesticides sold or distributed in the United States be registered by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) except where exempt from registration requirements.  FIFRA Section 2(hh) excludes specific substances, as well as substances that meet certain criteria, from the definition of a nitrogen stabilizer.

The substances that are specifically excluded are:

  1. Dicyandiamide; and

  2. Ammonium thiosulfate.

Text from 7 USC Title 7 (Agriculture), Chapter 6 (Insecticides and Environmental Pesticide control)

Use restrictions often accompany products that are EPA registered pesticides. Common limitations include:

  • Special equipment/tanks

  • Pesticide applicator license

  • Mode of action- may kill beneficial bacteria or enzymes in the soil

  • Max application amounts

  • Do not apply through irrigation systems; no foliar applications

Since Source DCD 25 is not an EPA registered pesticide, its versatility is unmatched.

  • Can be applied with all major forms of nitrogen

  • Non-corrosive

  • Does not kill beneficial bacteria/enzymes in the soil

  • Can be applied foliar and through fertigation systems

Note:  DCD is an AAPFCO defined nitrification inhibitor (see Stabilizer Stewardship info sheet)
